L’onde bleue, 2024

Akiko Yamashita, based in Los Angeles, and Sachiko Yamashita Grasseler, based in France, present their collaborative work ‘L’onde bleue (Blue Wave)’ specializing in light installations and projection mapping.

For these sisters, originally from Sapporo but now based abroad, this piece serves as a catalyst to rediscover the Japanese aesthetic from an overseas perspective. Drawing from the rich tradition of various expressions of blue in Japan such as ai (indigo), mizuasagi (light blue), gunjō (ultramarine), ruri (lapis lazuli), and konpeki (deep blue), as well as incorporating elegant language representing the myriad phenomena of nature such as utakata (transience) and aoshigure (blue autumn rain, to describe the water drops from fresh foliage), ‘L’onde bleue’ takes inspiration from Hokusai’s series method. In this work, each artist freely expresses impressions of various shades of blue, sometimes ephemeral and at other times brimming with vitality, through generative animation. Welcome to the resonant world of blue.

ロサンゼルスを拠点にするAkiko Yamashitaと、フランスで活動するSachiko Yamashita Grasseler、光のインスタレーションとプロジェクションマッピングを得意とするアーティスト姉妹による作品、「L’onde bleue（青い波）」。

札幌出身、拠点をそれぞれ海外に移した姉妹にとって、海外から眺める日本人の美意識を再発見するきっかけとなる本作品。藍色、水浅葱 、群青、瑠璃、紺碧など、日本古来の豊かな青色に対する表現から、泡沫（うたかた）、青時雨（あおしぐれ）など森羅万象を表現する雅語を題材に、北斎が広めた連作方法にインスピレーションを受けた「L’onde bleue」は、それぞれのアーティストが、ジェネラティブアニメーションによって、時には儚く、時には生命力に満ちた様々な青色の印象を自由に表現していく。共鳴する青色の世界へようこそ。
